Ron Wilkins : "The Return of The Trombocalist"
Wed, Jun 24

New York City based trombonist Ron Wilkins is a versatile and highly respected performer with more than four decades of experience across jazz, Broadway, and symphonic stages. A member of the Birdland Big Band and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, he has toured internationally as both a leader and sideman, performing with artists including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Lena Horne, Johnny Mathis, The Count Basie Orchestra, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He most recently appeared on Broadway as bass trombonist for the revival of "Gypsy" starring Audra McDonald, and has performed with leading Texas ensembles including the San Antonio Symphony and San Antonio Brass.
Wilkins also leads a New York–based big band alongside trombonist Rebecca Patterson, featuring original compositions by both artists. Their latest album, "The Vigil and the Sleeping Giant," recorded at Power Station in NYC, reflects a deeply personal chapter in Wilkins’ life, inspired by his recovery from a month-long medically induced coma in 2020 and Patterson’s experience during that time. The result is a powerful and introspective work exploring time, resilience, and transformation.
For this special performance, Wilkins takes the stage with the Mark Little Trio, bringing his signature depth of sound and musical storytelling to an intimate live setting.
