"A shining embodiment of this process... a conservationist of the bebop idiom, and a joyful guardian of its lexicon". - NPR "An adept jazz pianist with a deep understanding of the acoustic bebop, hard bop, and post-bop traditions, who matured into a nuanced and sophisticated virtuoso". - AllMusic
Jazz, TX is proud to present American jazz pianist Benny Green!
Born in New York City and raised in Berkeley, California, pianist Benny Green was introduced to jazz at an early age through his father’s record collection, which included Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, and other foundational voices of the music. He began piano lessons at age 7, played his first paid performance at 12, and made his major concert stage debut at 15 with the Monterey Jazz Festival High School All-Stars. After early work in the Bay Area with vocalist Faye Carol and NEA Jazz Master Eddie Henderson, Green returned to New York City at 19, where he was mentored by Walter Bishop Jr. and Walter Davis Jr. and performed with artists including Barry Altschul, Bobby Watson, and Jo Jones Jr.
Green went on to tour internationally with Betty Carter, appearing on her GRAMMY-winning album "Look What I Got," before joining Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, the Freddie Hubbard Quintet, and later the Ray Brown Trio, his longest tenure as a sideman. Named Oscar Peterson’s protégé and recipient of the Glenn Gould Award for excellence in music and communication, Green has built a celebrated recording career as a leader for Criss Cross, Blue Note Records, Telarc, and Sunnyside, with notable collaborations including Russell Malone, Oscar Peterson, and Diana Krall’s GRAMMY-winning "All for You." He continues to lead his trio, record new music, and carry forward one of the most respected voices in modern jazz piano.
As always our kitchen and bar are open for dinner service.

About Jazz TX
Jazz, TX is San Antonio's home for live jazz, tucked into the basement of the historic Pearl Brewery's Bottling Department. Founded in 2016 by bandleader and pianist Doc Watkins, the club picked up the torch of the city's great jazz rooms and quickly became its premier destination for live music. Seven nights of shows span jazz, blues, big band, Texas swing, salsa, and Latin jazz — from Doc Watkins and his ten-piece orchestra to world-class touring artists like Kevin Eubanks, Bill Charlap, and John Pizzarelli. Every show is an intimate, 90-minute ticketed concert. Come early for South Texas cuisine, craft cocktails, wine, and beer, and stay for the music.
